Retablas are also known as "laminas" in Mexico. They are small oil paintings on tin used in home altars to venerate saints. The literal translation for "retabla" is "behind the altar."

Here I've embosed the painting by tapping a nail on the back of the tin. I've also sanded away some of the paint revealing the tin beneath. The tin is acentuated with silver leaf.
